Ingredients
Brownies
-
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
-
3/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
-
1/4 cup white sugar
-
1 large egg, at room temperature
-
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
-
1 teaspoon white vinegar
-
3 tablespoons Dutch-processed cocoa powder
-
1/2 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional)
-
1/4 teaspoon red food gel coloring
-
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
-
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
Frosting
-
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
-
4 ounces full-fat cream cheese, at room temperature
-
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
-
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
-
1 teaspoon heavy cream, chilled
Directions
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line an 8×8-inch square pan with parchment paper, leaving enough overhang on all sides for easy removal.
-
In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, white sugar, and salt until the mixture begins to lighten in color, about 1 minute. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and vinegar, and whisk until smooth. Mix in the cocoa powder and espresso powder until fully combined, then whisk in the red food coloring. Add the flour and baking soda, whisking just until combined.
-
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it into an even layer.
-
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the brownies look set and begin to pull away from the edges of the pan. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan.
-
To make the frosting, beat the butter until light and fluffy. Add the cream cheese and beat until smooth. Mix in the confectioners’ sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt, beating for 2 to 3 minutes until creamy. Add the heavy cream and beat another 2 to 3 minutes until light and fluffy.
-
Spread the frosting evenly over the cooled brownies. For cleaner cuts, place the brownies in the refrigerator for a bit to allow the frosting to set. Slice into 16 bars and enjoy.
Hopefully these Red Velvet Brownies bring a smile to your face and a delicious new tradition to your Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re sharing them or savoring them solo, they’re sure to be a sweet hit. 💖🍫
