The History Behind Pinhook Flats

If you’ve ever walked through Pinhook Flats at Aksarben Village, you may have noticed that many of the floor plans carry the names of famous racehorses. This isn’t just a design choice—it’s a tribute to the rich history of Aksarben and its deep connection to horse racing and community events that shaped Omaha for generations.

Pinhook Flats at Aksarben Village has a rich and meaningful history. Aksarben was founded in 1895 by a group of business leaders who wanted to create a source of pride for the community and support the Nebraska State Fair. Over time, it also became a major hub for entertainment and economic growth in the region. Throughout its history, Aksarben hosted a wide variety of events, including elegant balls, rodeos, livestock shows, and horse racing.

To honor this legacy, Pinhook Flats memorializes the history of horse shows and racetracks by naming many of its floor plans after famous racehorses. As you walk through the halls, you’ll notice photographs and memorabilia celebrating these legendary horses and the riders who helped make them famous. Some of the most notable horses honored here include Secretariat, Citation, and Seabiscuit.

Secretariat

Secretariat’s racing career lasted from 1972 to 1973, but his impact on the sport remains legendary. Nicknamed “Big Red,” he is often considered one of the greatest racehorses in history. In 1973 he became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and set records in all three races, including his historic Belmont Stakes win by 31 lengths.

After retiring from racing, Secretariat became a successful sire and continued to gain recognition through the achievements of his offspring. His remarkable talent and powerful presence made him a beloved figure in the world of horse racing.

Citation

Citation raced from 1947 to 1951 and became one of the most successful racehorses of his era. He won the Triple Crown in 1948 and became the first racehorse in history to earn over $1 million in prize money.

After retirement, Citation became a sire and produced several notable offspring, including a horse named Silverspoon. Today, a floor plan at Pinhook Flats carries the Silverspoon name, continuing the tradition of honoring these incredible horses and their lasting legacy.

Seabiscuit

Seabiscuit has one of the most inspiring stories in horse racing history. Early in his career, he was considered an underdog, but as he developed his skills and found his rhythm, he

rose to become an icon of the sport. His career lasted from 1935 to 1940, during the height of the Great Depression.

Seabiscuit’s unlikely rise to greatness gave many Americans a sense of hope during a difficult time, and his perseverance helped make him one of the most beloved racehorses in history.

The legacy of Aksarben and its historic horse racing culture continues to live on at Pinhook Flats. By honoring legendary racehorses through our floor plan names and showcasing memorabilia throughout the building, we celebrate the stories that helped shape this community. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a racing fan, or simply someone who appreciates meaningful traditions, the spirit of Aksarben’s past remains an important part of life at Pinhook Flats today.
