Pacific Gardens Apartments Advice Column: Is your renter’s insurance paid up?

This is an all to familiar scene: someone leaving a grill unattended on an apartment balcony; someone falling asleep with a lit cigarette; a candle is left burning after a person goes out for the night. “Not me.” you say. Probably not – but possibly your neighbor.
Occasionally, someone will comment to me that they do not think they should have to carry renter’s insurance. At Pacific Gardens, and all Robert Hancock & Co, Properties, we require it. Not just because we want your liability to be covered if you make a mistake, but because we care about what happens to you and your things if someone else makes a mistake.
In the event that one of your neighbors does something careless and your things are damaged, our insurance will not provide you with coverage. Imagine if you had to replace everything you own – every item in your apartment. How many thousands, maybe tens-of-thousands of dollars would it take? In my experience renter’s insurance averages only about $10 a month. We all know times are tough, and everything is getting more expensive, but in this case my advice is: better to be penny-wise than pound-foolish. Pay $10 per month, rather than thousands to replace your items.
