Get Ahead of Winter: How to Prepare Your Vehicle This Fall

The leaves are changing, the air is crisp—and that means winter isn’t far behind. Fall is the perfect time to get your vehicle ready before the cold, snow, and ice arrive. A little preparation now can help you avoid headaches (and chilly roadside waits) later on.

1. Check Your Battery
Cooler weather can make weak batteries fail once temperatures really drop. Have yours tested this fall to make sure it’s holding a charge. Clean the terminals and replace it if it’s nearing the end of its life.

2. Inspect Tires and Pressure
As temperatures fluctuate, so does tire pressure. Check your tire pressure regularly and make sure your tread is deep enough for wet and soon-to-be-slippery roads. If you plan to use winter tires, now’s the time to inspect or order them.

3. Top Off and Replace Fluids
Check your antifreeze, oil, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Consider switching to a winter-grade washer fluid that won’t freeze. Staying ahead on fluid maintenance helps your engine handle the coming chill.

4. Test Wipers, Heater, and Defroster
Don’t wait for the first frost to find out your defroster doesn’t work. Make sure your wipers are in good shape and your heater and defroster are ready to go before you need them.

5. Restock or Build an Emergency Kit
Fall is a great time to prepare your winter car kit. Include basics like jumper cables, a flashlight, gloves, an ice scraper, snacks, and a blanket. You’ll be glad it’s there when temperatures drop.

6. Give It a Good Clean
Before the salt and grime of winter hit the roads, wash and wax your vehicle. A good coat of wax protects your paint and makes it easier to wash off salt later.
