When Severe Weather Strikes

Record breaking severe weather struck the Omaha metro this past weekend. Wind gusts exceeded 80 mph in some places! Thousands across Omaha have been dealing with power outages and fallen trees/other debris. More than 180,000 Omaha metro residents lost power due to the severe storm on Friday, July 10th. As of July 12th, there are still over 30,000 in Nebraska without power. This is the worst storm OPPD has had to deal with in recent history. You can always check OPPD’s website for updates during power outages! Crews have been working around the clock to ensure that Omaha residents are not without power for much longer. We want to thank our residents for being so patient during our power outage!

When severe weather strikes, we want to be sure that our residents are safe and know procedures for emergencies. Have an emergency kit on hand that is easily accessible. This should include: flashlights, batteries, first-aid kit, battery powered radio and 3 days-worth of water and non-perishable food items. Know your evacuation plan along with safe shelter locations (bathroom, tub, parking garage). Avoid any windows and get to the lowest floor possible. Kneel or crouch and cover the back of your head with your hands. Do not go outside or travel during severe weather.
