Lots of communities are able to tell you the average utility costs they see, and this is important because it can play into your rental budget. It’s also important to ask about additional fees, such as parking. Some communities have free surface lot parking, while some charge. Some communities come with a garage space included, some have garages available for rent.

Another important topic to consider is the application process. Not every community has the same requirements for their application. Be sure to ask them to go over the details of what they require to work toward an approval, and be transparent with them if you have any concerns about being able to meet the criteria they require. Make sure to find out what application charges are required to secure a unit, and which are refundable and non-refundable. If you need to move in quickly, find out how long the application process takes.

Take into consideration which amenities you require. Is not having a gym or pool deal breakers for you? Do you need in-unit laundry, or on-site laundry?
