Apartment Communities: How to Prevent Recycling Contamination
Recycling is encouraged at Robert Hancock & Co. Properties. We know that recycling plays an important part in saving the planet and reducing waste. Unfortunately, our recycling containers are often considered contaminated and sent directly to the landfill because not everyone understands what is and is not allowed.
We thought we would take a moment to go over some information to prevent contamination. The following are some tips to help you with your recycling efforts.
1. Do not put plastic bags into the recycling containers. If you use plastic bags to hold your recyclables, empty the bag directly into the recycling container. Plastic bags are the biggest issue at recycling centers. The bags get caught in the machinery and cause troubles.
2. Know which plastics can and can not be recycled. Each plastic container has a code on it (numbered 1-7). These numbers sort the plastics into categories. In Omaha, NE, the recycling center accepts numbers: 1, 2, 3, and 5.
3. Make sure that your recyclables are clean and dry. They should be clean enough to use again in order to avoid contamination.
4. When in doubt, throw it out! Don’t risk contaminating an entire load of recyclables by guessing if something is recyclable. That could cause an entire truck to be sent to the landfill.
With your help we can continue to work towards reducing waste in landfills and make the world a better place.
